| Hi, I had been campus recruited by IBM Global Services and after only one month training I am working as a DB2 DBA on client side for past two months. I dont see many oppurtunities building for me in future since a DBA without prior knowledge of SQL and PLSQL is useless. shall I go for a project change at this point of time!!! |

IBM Global Services, like other consulting organizations, is probably starting to see some demand for DBA's in the mainframe environments. There may be some real long term opportunities for people without skills in DB2 and/or IMS to pursue a career path in those technologies. Once you have several years of experience in one of the mainstream commercial RDBMS products there may be opportunities to transition into a different product, given sufficient motivation and a demonstrated ability to perform. > > I dont see many oppurtunities building for me in future since a DBA > without prior knowledge of SQL and PLSQL is useless. Well do you want to build yourself up in those areas or not? If you do want to get stronger in those areas why not spend some time outside of work getting stronger? > > shall I go for a project change at this point of time!!! For something easier? For something more relevant to your long term interests? You don't give us much idea of what area's you think are a better match for your current skillset. |

| One or two years down the line working as a DBA what specific areas apart from administration i should be focusing on to compete with a person who career has followed a more conventional growth path......moving from a sql developer to db administration. |

You don't need SQL. |

There is plenty of time within 2 years to gain substantial sql developer skills approaching even expert status given sufficient motivation. You need to start with the basics and plan a program that matches your current abilities. No DBA is worth much if "only" administration skills are what they possess. So if I were you, I would put a huge amount of time and effort into developing sql knowledge first. Then work at putting those skills to some challenges in development efforts. SQL tuning and performance tuning are also areas that will need attention but put those things into your planning efforts after you have master sql syntax and basic development skills. You need to look deep into yourself and decide if you are up to the challenge or if you don't have it in you. |

Now that's a really helpful reply |
