| Greetings all, I work as an Oracle consultant and want to learn more about the Linux/Oracle combination. I have taken a look at Metalink for the certifiable configurations for the x86 platform. The problem is that you just cant (am I right ?) download the Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS/ES editions or SuSE SLES7/SLES8 editions for free. How do you get these versions for free for just educational purpose ? Are anyone having the same dilema ? Since I would rather learn the Linux version that the customers are using when running Linux. Thanks for any comment. Cheers ! Christian |

Hello, here's a link for downloading SuSE SLES9 for evaluation purposes: http://www.suse.de/en/business/produ...sles/eval.html But you may want to wait, since SLES9 is not yet certified for Oracle and you may face problems trying to install Oracle on it. When it will be certified, you will surely find detailed instructions on the SuSE website including troubleshooting, workarounds, etc. Have fun! In a nutshell, for learning Oracle9i R2 you can use the certified systems (of course) and *at* *least* the following uncertified kernels: - Red Hat 9 - Fedora Core 1 & 2 - SuSE Professional 8.2, 9.0 - Mandrake 8, 9 Each flavor has issues and gotchas that have been discussed in the archives. For the Red Hat variants, check out http://www.puschitz.com and for the SuSE ones check http://www.suse.com/oracle >> Support Matrix g'luk /Hans |

There are 10g installation instructions on the web that will tell you which of your /etc/ files you need to change to fool the Oracle installer into believing your machine has RHEL installed on it. | I cannot think of any reason if you are starting fresh to not use white box linux as you get familiar with linux and oracle. Sure some other distro's work well but RHAS is well established and white box is a clone/knockoff of RHAS. |

Other distributions are more robust while still being gratis and still contain the same core that RHEL would. You can concentrate more on Oracle and less on where Redhat or it's cloners might not have gotten something right. This might also put you in a better position to evaluate Suse's enterprise edition too, and not just donate business to Redhat. > > Sure some other distro's work well but RHAS is well established and > white box is a clone/knockoff of RHAS. ...this sounds vaguely familiar. -- Negligence will never equal intent, no matter how you attempt to distort reality to do so.
