Default container recovery

Hi all,

Is there a way to recover a single container if its been corrupted or
mark bad without restoring whole tablespace?

environment: db28.1/aix5.1/tsm/rs-6000.

Regards
Jignesh

No. Minimum recovery = tablespace.

Jignesh, I am Posting our IM's on this topic, I do not know If I
should but it
may be useful to revit this discussion.

Anand Zandy, I have a DB2 question
Anand Can I ask u
Zandy sure
Anand is it possible to restore a container if its mark bad or not
available for some reason without restoring the whole tablespace"?
Anand for eg: say 1 tablespace has 10 containers and i want to restore
only 1 container
Zandy Wow. That's some question you have there. Frankly I'm not yet
that adept with DB2 to answer it with certaintly but my gut tell me
it's possible as long as you have the backup of the transaction logs.
Zandy You can do a point in time restore
Anand Thanks
Zandy np. I can research it more if you want.
Anand My friend had a question, not me
Anand if time permits
Zandy I also depends on the version of DB2
Zandy I think in version 8 , you can do this
Anand he is using db2 udb 7.2/8.1
Anand Zandy he says .......but u know....if one container is not
available for some reason then crash recovery happens for that
tablespace
Anand he says ...................minimum recovery is a tablespace
recovery
Anand he says ...............in db2, data in tablespace is scatters
(rebalanced) in each and every container
Anand he says ....................in v8, one can drop a container
Zandy I see. Looks like your friend is right. I just did a quick
search in Google
Zandy http://groups.google.com/groups?q=co...s.com&rnum =1
Anand Zandy, I am just passing messages bet you guys :}>
Anand thx Zandy for your help
Zandy See one of the limitations of Db2? In informix, you can do this
since version 5
Zandy I really miss Informix :-(
Anand He says ..................but u know u cannot restore one table
in informix
Anand he is the same guy how has posted message on google :}>
Zandy :-)
Anand he is the same guy who has posted message on google :}>

Anand I guess he is correct, you can not restore one table in informix
Zandy that maybe true but there is still a workaround
Anand I asked him ............can you tell me ..what's container ...in
informix langauge ?
Anand he says ............in informix, we hve dbspace and in db2 we
hve tablespace
Zandy container is a chunk
Anand he says ...........in informix and db2, we have containers
within the tablespace/dbspace
Zandy tablespace = dbspace
Anand does informix has 2GB limitation on each chunk ?
Zandy not anymore. Since 9.4
Zandy only difference is that a tablespace in DB2 can only belong to
one database

Zandy in Informix, many databases can share a tablspace
Anand Thx a lot zandy for sharing all this info
Zandy np

Andy: can you tell me ..what's container ...in informix langauge ?
jignesh74: in informix, we hve dbspace and in db2 we hve tablespace
jignesh74: in informix and db2, we have containers within the
tablespace/dbspace
Andy: so, what's container in db2 ?
jignesh74: all data resides in containers both in informix/db2
Andy: humm...I did not know about this ..in informix
jignesh74: arre...come on
jignesh74: containeers are raw device..u remember..each of 2gb
jignesh74: informix has a limitation of 2gb for each raw device
(container)
Andy: abbe ...chunk bole na
jignesh74: yup..wohi re
jignesh74: in US..they say containers...
Andy: ohh, okay
jignesh74: alriite...means chunks (informix) and container (db2) are

jignesh74: just like row and tuples
Andy: hey, chunk can be more than 2 GB ...since 9.4
jignesh74: i think u know wat is tuples
jignesh74: yup...i guess
Andy: okay, got it
jignesh74:
Andy: he says .............only difference is that a tablespace in DB2
can only belong to one database

Andy: is that right ?
jignesh74: nowadays no one says tuples
