Apparently the problem with the connection error message

"Error while checking if SQL Server is installed: [DNETLIB] [Connection
Open](Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or Access is denied
(-214767259)"

is due to SQL Server being installed as a "Named Instance" instead of a
default instance. I confirmed this with another guy that had this
exact problem.
