Default Connection failed

I'm trying to connect to SQL server 2000 on windows 98
machines and whilst setting up an ODBC DSN I get the
following error:

Connection Failed
SQL State: 'HYT00'
SQL Server Error: 0
[microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]
Timeout Expired

It works fine on other machines with XP. I've had a
little serch about the only clue is that it might have
something to do with the SQLSRV.dll but I've tried
downloading the latest MDAC and that doesn't seem to make
much difference.
