Hi,



When I try to create DNS connection using SQL Driver from ODBC Data Source
Administrator I am getting an error:

“[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data Source Name not found and no
default driver specified. When I check SQL Driver in the Driver’s page of
the ODBC Administrator program I see that Version and Company attributes
are not shown. Then I have tried is to reinstall MDAC. That did not work
since my MDAC does not exists as standalone any more and it is included in
Windows XP SP2, so I have tried Microsoft suggested steps to fix the
driver manually. I have finished that procedure but the problem remained.



Any ideas?

To understand the issue better, I'd like to know the following informaiton:

1. What's OS do you use? Is it XP? If so, did you install SP2 as you
mentioned?

2. I'd like to know if you have reinstall MDAC by using MDAC.inf file?

If you didn't try this, please try to use MDAC.inf to reinstall MDAC from
SP2.

If the issue persists, please try to repair MDAC by using mdac repair tool
to see if it works.

Hi Peter,

First of all I want to thank you for taking a time and looking into the
problem that I have. Here are the answers to the questions you have had:

1. Windows XP with SP2.
2. I did reinstall MDAC using two methods:
a) Manually (starting from MDAC.inf and then followed
instructions
provided below).
b) Using MDAC repair tool that I have downloaded from macropool

Neither of them fixed the problem, ODBC Manager still does not
recognizes SQL Driver and if I try to create DNS file I am getting the
same error message as before (see my original post).

Before we go further, please collect the information:

1. Is it a 32 or 64 bit version Windows XP?

2. Please check the permission of the following registry key, then export
the registry as a reg file, and compress it as a zip file before you send
it to me at petery@microsoft.com
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\SQL Server

3. Does the issue only occur with SQL odbc driver? Did you try other driver
such as Text driver or Excel driver?

4. Please use the following utitlity to check MDAC on your machine, and
send me the result.

It seems the MDAC components are overlapped by some application installed
on this machine. Since reinstall MDAC.inf cannot solve the issue, I suggest
that you try to re-apply Windows XP SP2 to see if it fixes this problem.

If it works, please install other Windows updates after SP2 so that it's
upgraded to the latest file versions.
