Default Excel 200 zero-size window?

Running Excel 2000 under Win98, the standard (non-maximised) Window size
seems to have become zero.

In other words, when starting Excel either by running excel.exe (from
shortcut or directory display) or by clicking on an .XLS file, an entry
appears in the taskbar, but no window opens on the screen. Right-
clicking on the taskbar entry and clicking Restore does nothing.
Clicking Maximize works properly. It is as if the normal window size has
become 0 x 0. On trying to Restore the Maximized window, the window
disappears again.

An alternative description: Excel in what should be a normal window
behaves as if minimized. It can be Maximized, but Restore is the same as
Minimize. It can be made to work full-screen or not at all.

I would be grateful for any idea on what is happening/ Is there a
registry entry which governs the current size of the normal window?

Best wishes,
