Windows 2000

SQL 2000 SP3a (or SP3)

Same problem, but no resolution:

TEMP & TMP are short paths w/ no spaces

HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\FileSystem\N

tfsDisable8dot3NameCreatio

n already equaled 0

MDAC was already at 2.7

Mixed-mode authentication

TCP was a non-standard port, but even after changing that & rebooting
(multiple times), SP3 install fails, whether using SA or Windows
authentication.

Any further ideas?

Just to add to the fun, querying version in QA shows the SP3 version,
though it doesn't appear files were ever updated.
