SQL 2005 ODBC connections disconnects over WAN Link

We have a remote site (workstations) that uses an application to connect via
ODBC back to a SQL 2005 DB and they experience frequent disconnects.
According to our Networking Team Bandwidth is not an issue.

Is this poor performance expected over a WAN Link?
Can I do any tweaking on the SQL Server?
Should the ODBC connection be using TCP Connections?

Any help appreciated
