Default Building a relational web database?

Hi,

I am looking to set up a relational web database. The databases one
find as a buy and set-up (plug and play) programs don't have what I
find imperative in what I am looking for; namely: an email system
that
informs those who put search terms in the database and will be
informed once the term(s) is found. The database will be filled in by
another group of people.

Anyone knowing such program as a plug and play configuration? Or some
serious programmer able to set-up such a database at a "decent"
price?

I appreciate to read yu here or contact me directly at above email
address.

Thank-you.

Not directly. Most of the big relational databases are a "backend" to a
web application. As such, it's commonly the customer's task to
implement whatever they need--business logic, information layout, email,
etc.

Got code?

No, nothing yet.

Start from scratch.

Afaik, NO database mails. It's not it's task. Then again, almost no
database is filled by a user with direct access. You're not looking for a
database with certain qualities, you're looking for a piece of script or
application with certain qualities (which my be tied in with a certain
type of database, or be able to work with several ones at the users desire.

What platform are you running?

You need an application, and knowing the platform might help locate
the application.

E.g., if you're running on a Unix platform, you can create a CGI for
data entry (such as PHP), then that program can call a freeware Perl
script called "sendEmail". (Search web for "perl sendemail")

sendEmail might run on Windows, if there's a Windows version of Perl,
or there might be a better Windows app.

Ok, thanks to all for responding. I am >NOT< a programmer. What I need
is a relational database. Two groups of users: - one that puts the
info in the database (large quantities of info & pics). Another that
can search and will be informed by email when search terms will be
matched. Many programs on the web do meet the first two conditions. I
have seen none meeting the third condition so far. That third
condition is imperative in the project(s) I wish to put on air.

I was looking on the Net for plug and play programs in which a
"sendmail" code could be coupled? Here's a link to a program that
should do the job partially(?): http://www.websitedatabases.com/database_tools.html
(read the "PHP Magic Plus" arguments)
but again I am NOT a programmer nor a specialist, just a marketer
whishing to set up the database(s). Someone being able to help set up
the concept will be financially rewarded for setting up, running, and
maintenance. In fact I need serious people to take the road to growth.

So, if someone feels confortable setting up and wish to work out the
concept together in a "correct" and "honnest" way, he is welcome to
make proposals. Just contact me at my email address
collector@collections.net.

Thanks.

OK. Then let's go step-by-step.
First, please answer the question above: are you tied to a specific
platform (eg. server OS) and/or language?

Next:

> What I need is a relational database.

Could you please try and explain why you insist on having a relational
database? What is it in a database that you're looking for?

[You may actually end up with a relational database, but why do you
insist on having one?]

> Two groups of users: - one that puts the

I assume this may be a web application (a set of web forms) allowing
people to log in and enter - perhaps - data of products in a web shop or
such.

This will require you to have an additional small application to
administer your users/admins. At least you want to create users, activate
and deactivate them, be able to change critical user data, and be able to
supply a new password and/or userID in case they forgot them.

> Another that can search and will be informed by email when search terms will be

So, you probably want people to be able to register and obtain a userID
and password. Then you want an input form that allows them to log in, and
one to enter search phrases.

In the input application above, you want a routine/module that searches
the entered data for alle stored search phrases, and pass the result to a
script that sends out e-mails....unless you don't want those mails to be
sent immediately. Perhaps you want to have mails sent once a day. In that
case, you'll need a cron job, or a mailing script that you start manually
once a day.

From your description, I'm not quite sure which the third condition is.

There you go again, insisting on having databases. Maybe you end up
without any, and still be satisfied with the functionality.

In that case, a good start would be to sign your own name, and not some
fancy animals nickname. You'd be taken a lot more seriously.

Since you are unable to articulate any technical specifics as to
platform (Windows, UNIX, others) or preferred relational database engine
(posting in c.d.m. says you want it in MySQL) or the preferred
programming language or accessibility (inTERnet vs. inTRAnet), give me
all of the requirements and your budget for the project, and I will
provide you with an estimate on what it would cost for me to write the
application you cannot seem to find. I can tell you it ain't going to
be shrink-wrap-priced either - well that depends on what you consider
shrink-wrapped - some auto-cad type apps go for > $2K...

The preferred platform will depend on the hosting company (you, me - I
use VAMP -VMS/Apache/MySQL/PHP and LAMP - Linux..., or some third party
hosting company).

you mean something like this:
http://www.google.com/alerts

the database is the web

the input is coming from a lot off internet pages in the world

the output is mailed by Google if you enter nice 'searchwords'...
