| No. W-2 employees in the United States generally means any employee who is a regular member of your payroll. You then perform tax withholding for them and submit those taxes to the government on a regular basis. At the end of the year you then provide that person with a "W-2 Statement" which is simply a form stating the particulars of money earned and money withheld for that person from and by your company. For independent contractors, you would provide a Form "1099" which simply totals ALL of their income earned from you. You are NOT responsible for withholding any money for their taxes, social security, un-employment compensation, etc. That is totally their responsibility. | dlprogress: As no one else replied: USA Internal Revenue Service (IRS, the Federal Tax people) http://www.irs.gov W-2 is the annual statement given by an employer to each direct hire employee which reflects total taxable wages, taxes paid, and so forth. Your Federal Government has a similar set up, just calls it something else. An independent contractor, who submits an invoice, is now issued annually a 1098 form. I think it is a 1098-misc. At my last job this was referred to as a 1098 worker, or 1098 contractor. A 1098 contractor must pay their own taxes. I don't know what arrangement your government uses for this case.
