I've been programming in Progress 4GL for 6 years now, and I haven't use any
SmartObjects.

What are the benefits of SmartObjects?

How how maintenance is needed for it? It seems to be a hassle when upgrading
to a ne Progress Version. The company that I'm working now decided to remove
SmartObjects from their software. They're using ActiveX for the most part to
be inline with Windows look-and-feel.

If you use SMO in V8 and customised them, then the upgrade process to
V9x was extremely painful. Less so if you didn't do any customising.
IMO, SmartObjects are dying.. I have reliable information from PSC that
they are considered 'mature', which means no new releases/features, only
bug fixes.. I would continue ignoring them, especially as OE 10.1 is
(hopefully) going to be introducing a new development environment (using
Eclipse (www.eclipse.org))..
