Hi,
Im new to progress and want to learn as much as possible about 4Gl and smart
objects, i know resources are limited but can anyone provide some idea of
where i can find some learning material?

All the manuals are available from the Progress website for free in pdf
or html format:

Note that they've started calling it OpenEdge as of version 10.

The "getting started" collection is the obvious place to start, from
there I'd start with the Programming Handbook. Progress also has some
CBTs available if you have a budget for your training. The Progress
Email Group is the primary user group, and their website
(http://www.peg.com/) has a lot of helpful info - it's also probably a
better place to ask questions than this newsgroup.

Bravepoint also publishes some very good books on more advanced Progress
topics.
