| Does anyone have experience with how Progress charges software companies/developers. My understand is that if you develop a software package for resale, progress negotiates a licensing fee, which is a % of your revenue for that product. They then also take a % of the ongoing maintenance fees. Is this correct? If so what % are they taking? And is that reasonable if you are developing a software packages that support less than 20 users. It seems to me that the development costs and ongoing costs in a Microsoft environment would be significantly less expensive. That said, if you have a product that is developed in Progress, what is the best way to port it to a Microsoft solution and how expensive is that. Thanks |

| I believe the % of revenue pricing model is only if you are going t sell a hosted application (ASP model). If your software will be sol as a package that require one or more Progress licenses to be include there will be reseller pricing which allows you to make some profit o the licenses. In fact many Progress VAR's sell their applications wit the database "embedded" and don't necessarily advertise the Progres element. I work with both Progress and MS technology and have now fo over 5 years and would probably opt for a .Net based environment fo new product development that wasn't oriented towards an existin Progress base. With Microsoft you can purchase a development produc such as Visual Studio 2003 and create an application that can b distributed royalty-free to multiple customers. In some cases you ca even include MSDE which is an embedded version of SQL Server withou additional licensing costs. This obviously limits you to a Window environment whic may or may not be a problem. I have also maintaine an MSDN Universal Subscription for the last two years and find havin unfettered access to all of the Microsoft Business Software is a grea benefit and well worth the $1000 or so per year it costs -- ccotter ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ccotter3's Profile: http://www.progresstalk.com/member.p...nfo&userid=411 View this thread: http://www.progresstalk.com/showthre...?threadid=8172 |

If you're going into business with them, you should get use to speaking with them. > if you are developing a software packages that support less than 20 > users. There certainly is a certain thresh hold one needs before it becomes viable. For example, 600 users on MS is nearly impossible, 600 on Progress is cheaper than 600 on Oracle. > > That said, if you have a product that is developed in Progress, what is > the best way to port it to a Microsoft solution and how expensive is > that. > > Thanks As expensive as a re-write from scratch. |
