| As much as they might resist the idea of giving anything away, the reality of the computer field today is that proprietary software is being overtaken by freeware and open source. We don't want Progress to be displaced by SQL freeware. The only way proprietary software can make it in the market today is as an enhancement to freeware, preferably open source, of its previous versions. I invite everyone on this forum to join in urging PSC to make versions 6.3 and earlier freeware, and preferably the Unix/Linux versions also open source under the Gnu Public License. Then it could become part of the several standard distributions of Linux, and Progress could emerge as the dominant 4GL/DBMS on its merits. PSC will make a lot more money selling later versions and we will all get more development work. -- Jon ---------------------------------------------------------------- Starflight Corporation 7793 Burnet Road #37, Austin, TX 78757 512/374-9585 http://www.pynthan.com Jon Roland <jdr@pynthan.com> ---------------------------------------------------------------- |

The code will not be released (at least not in the near future). The 'Gemini' project which was the code that the NuSphere team 'donated' to MySQL was proprietary Progrss code from the Progress DB engine, which was why they went to court, lost the case and then pulled out, taking the code with them. IMHO, MySQL's lawsuit made sure that Joe will not allow the code to be released as open source. BTW, there is a free product available from Progress. Head over to www.possenet.org and download the Developers Briefcase and the POSSE source. Build it, and you have a functional Progress GUI development tool (as long as you don't develop any commercial applications with it, that is). Just my 2c.. Kevin |
