To do this you must be root echo <shared_buffers * 8192> /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax to make it permanent edit /etc/sysctl.conf kernel.shmmax = <shared_buffers * 8192> example shared_buffers = 20000 it is 167763968 (160mb).
