Default i386 Emulator for SPARC

Hi,

I got a a SUN Ultra Enterprise 3500 with 4 SPARC CPUs and 4GB RAM ...

I'd like to migrate my current system to this machine. Current machine is a
normal PC with Linux/VServer and one Windows inside VMWare. I need to do
this step by step.

Is there a good i386 emulator for Solaris on Sparc? What about the system
resources? 4GB and 4*400Mhz SPARC enough?

Thank you,
Peter

No! Please feel free to write one. Keep in mind, however, that i386
machines are so readily and cheaply available that there will be little
market for such a tool.

Enough for what? Just migrate to Solaris on an x86 server.

Get one of the PCI cards what have an intel CPU on board.
But for me its hard to understand why anybody would migrate from a
nice PC to
such an old and noisy system.

I believe Bochs was ported to Solaris; google for it.

The memory is fine but the CPUs will kill you. Your single-threaded
apps (like the emulator) will only run at 400MHz and the performance
will be unacceptable (especially since Bochs is a full-on emulator and
not just virtualization like VMWare).

I posted earlier (haven't seen it come through yet) but I forgot there
is another emulator project, QEMU, that may help. Support for Sparc
in testing.

qemu works a little better, IMO; but it would still be intolerably slow.

That's as in executing SPARC code, I think; executing x86 on SPARC has
worked well enough for me, save that the SPARC CPUs typically are not
fast enough - for emulation, one has to be a good deal faster than what
one wants to emulate.
