Why not? Where's the big difference? OpenSolaris 2008.05 is really comparable to Hardy Heron IMHO. > I was hoping the Solaris groups wouldn't have all the "my OS is better > than your OS" BS going on. Well, there are trolls that yoy just can't ignore. Loads of them... > I just want to learn the OS not pick sides in a holy war. One must have some fun too... ;-) |

There is a considerable performance and stability difference between Ubuntu and RHEL or Suse Enterprise Linux. -- 0000001010011010 - The sixteen bit word of The Beast. "May Darkness Consume You." This is the inane discussion I've been talking about... Solaris is an OS developed by a single company, so of course Solaris is Solaris. Linux, however, is developed, packaged and distributed by a multitude of different companies, groups and individuals so, in the case of Linux, "Enterprise" is in no way nonsense. -- 0000001010011010 - The sixteen bit word of The Beast. But the comparison was OpenSolaris vs. Ubuntu, wasn't it? What has that to do with RedHat or Novell versions? But OpenSolaris/Solaris is well up to a match against them both on performance and stability plus ease of administration, support and features. |

Yes it was. > What has that to do with RedHat or Novell versions? Allow me to quote myself: "There is a considerable performance and stability difference between Ubuntu and RHEL or Suse Enterprise Linux." Any comparison of Linux and Solaris should be with a distribution of Linux that targets the business production environment not a distribution that's attempting to compete directly with Windows on look and feel. Unless a beauty contest is the core interest. > But OpenSolaris/Solaris is well up to a match against them both on > performance and stability plus ease of administration, support and > features. Of that I have no doubt, nor was it ever in question... I wouldn't say the same of Ubuntu however. -- 0000001010011010 - The sixteen bit word of The Beast. "May Darkness Consume You." |

Then there are application vendors, who could all be lined up I don't interface with Oracle support as often as Sun and I have had to escalate TARs for Oracle for Solaris x86 and Oracle for Solaris x64 bugs, but Sun support's self-service website is frequently broken and I have had to send snail mail to Jonathan Schwartz to get service orders resolved. How has your experience with Oracle and Sun differed? John groenveld@acm.org |

I'm sure your *very* large corporate is very proud of you. You must not be a big fan of all the Sun Enterprise class servers then? http://www.sun.com/servers/coolthreads/t5140/ Don't look like crap to me. -- "Remain calm, we're here to protect you!" |
