I think you misspelled "Very Expensive Crap" I don't know what the execs at sun are smoking but it I'm guessing its better than Mr J and friends had back at UCB. I deal with systems that run a significant % of the GDP of a country and I need rock solid stability and for audit reasons I have to have "1 machine, 1 function" My PFY has pointed out that the patches between 2 recent versions of Sol 10 involve more code changes than the entire patch kit from Sol 2.5 to 2.9. To me that means Sol 10 is still well inside that Beta category and they may be years away from release. I'm ok with that. Sol 10 has some cool features but its also go some mind boggling problems. What I'm not ok with is not being able to buy machines that can replace 3 year old machines that aren't forced down the dark alley. Every one of the hare core security people I know (the ones who used to do binary patches to live systems when needed) agree. Has sun blinded its own people? Sun needs to understand the needs of customers like me or else someone else will come along and take their business away. They used to understand and they still have quite a few engineers who do understand yet their management seems to be sailing the ship while steering with the aid of a crack pipe. Right now our standard build is Netra 210/240 since they are rock solid and they keep running. I don't need speed, I need stability, security and audibility and I get that with Sol 9. And I'm still trying to find out when EOL on the Netra 210 will be. -tim http://web.abnormal.com |
