| Hi all, first of all sorry for my bad english I have a SUN server with 2 network interfaces (hme0 and hme1) and a few Sun Ray's. The Ray's use the hme1 interface. The hme0 has the ip-adress 13.200.233.80 and hme1 has 192.168.1.1. I just installed the SUNWpppd*-Packages to use my ADSL-connection with Solaris (pppd with pppoe). The ADSL-connection uses the hme0 interface. There is no /etc/notrouter, but a /etc/defaultrouter, which contains the ip 13.200.233.80, only. Now the problem: If the /etc/defaultrouter-file contains the ip-adress, it takes a long time to resolve domains and to connect to any sites on the internet (on the server and on the rays). often i can't connect to any sites on the internet. But if i put localhost in the /etc/defaultrouter, i can use the internet without any problems on the server, but i can't use it on the ray's. (the same if /etc/defaultrouter is empty). is it possible to get pppd with pppoe work on Sun rays? Thank you. Julian |

You can make the SunRay server work with pppd, and then the SunRay sessions (which run on the SunRay server) will work with the PPP connection. -Greg -- Do NOT reply via e-mail. The question is why it fails in the SunRay sessions and works directly on the server. Julian |

Everything you see on the Sun Ray is running on the server and most applications can't tell if you're on a Sun Ray or not, so if you're having problems, it would appear you don't really have it working on the server. -- __________________________________________________ ______________________ Alan Coopersmith alanc@alum.calberkeley.org http://www.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU/~alanc/ aka: Alan.Coopersmith@Sun.COM Working for, but definitely not speaking for, Sun Microsystems, Inc. |

Telnet or FTP to a site on the Internet doesn't work from a dtterm window on a SunRay? -Greg -- Do NOT reply via e-mail. Reply in the newsgroup. |

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're doing here, but I'll make some guesses ... PPP creates a network interface. Once the interface is up, it's usable by *anyone* on the system. So, if you create one on the SunRay server, then all SunRay users will have access to the PPP link. Is that what you want? Assuming that's what you want, what you're describing sounds like a permissions problem of some sort. Please post *exact* logs containing the failures you see -- include as much information as you can. (Of particular use: the contents of /etc/ppp, the messages logged via syslog when the "debug" option is used in pppd, and any messages you see on stderr.) -- James Carlson, IP Systems Group <james.d.carlson@sun.com> Sun Microsystems / 1 Network Drive 71.234W Vox +1 781 442 2084 MS UBUR02-212 / Burlington MA 01803-2757 42.497N Fax +1 781 442 1677 |

Because of my bad english the problem again: I have got a SUN RAY Server with SUN's SUNWpppd* packages installed. Now, i establishe a connection to my ISP with ppp and pppoe. something like pppd call isp. ifconfig shows something like this: sppp1: flags=10008d1<UP,POINTOPOINT,RUNNING,NOARP,MULTICA ST,IPv4> mtu 1492 index 7 inet 217.234.116.120 --> 217.5.98.166 netmask ffffff00 So i can use my internet connection. But if i try to connect to a server (http with mozilla, ping, fetchmail for my mails or something else) i can't connect to the server. The hosts were not found. If i try to connect again (after 1 second), the hosts were found. Si always need 2 or more attempts to connect to a server on the internet. It's a nightmare for cron jobs... So i thinked it's a problem with the routing table. My /etc/defaultrouter contains just the ip adress (13.200.233.80). This is not the ip adress from the NIC with the SUN RAY Network. I changed the entry in /etc/deafultrouter to 127.0.0.1. I have rebooted the machine and then the first attempt were succesfully, always and every user could use the internet with the first attempt _but_ no SUN Ray could connect to the server. The SUn Rays could not found the server. I changed the /etc/defaultrouter again to 13.200.233.80 127.0.0.1 or 13.200.233.80 127.0.0.1 (newline and space seperated - i tried both - the manpages says "separated by white space"), but it seems meanless (the SUN Ray can connect, but no host is found with one attempt). So it doesn't depend on the configuration of the pppd settings. It just is a problem with the routing. What can i do to get this work? It's horrible to browse the internet if you must request a site two or more times in the Browser to see the site. (I never get any error messages in any logfile or on the console) Julian |

You should add dns to this line: hosts: files dns just a guess, I had this problem a few weeks ago. Good luck... |
