| Finally, after 6 weeks, I have support numbers for my Ultra 20 with Silver support: A Contract Number, an ESID number and Pin. However, non of these work as the Sun Subscription Key in Update Manager. Is the Subscription Key a different number from these or is something still not enabled ? |

It's supposed to be your contract number. You do need to associate it with your Sunsolve account. Contact Sun support if it doesn't work. Many people have had trouble with this. In my case, it took over a month to resolve. There's a useful FAQ at: http://www.sun.com/service/sunupdate...l#registration -- -Gary Mills- -Unix Support- -U of M Academic Computing and Networking- |

Have you already linked your 'MySun' account with a SunSolve access account ? Because that account (and the password) is what you need to gain access, ofcourse in combination with the contract number. -- Groetjes, Peter ..\\ PGP/GPG key: http://www.catslair.org/pubkey.asc |

Now that you have the Ultra 20, how do you like it? What I want to know is if you don't buy the top model, how will one backup his account if it is a standalone station? I was thinking of an external firewire dvd burner but don't know if Solaris 10 will do backups to it. |

I have the middle model which I am using as a home system. The fans are very quiet. (At power up the fans run noisily at high speed for a few seconds then slow down.) The case looks good in a home environment. The system comes with a USB mouse which has a center wheel instead of a button (which takes some getting use to for someone that has been using 3-button mice for the last 20+ years). It uses 75 to 80 Watts power when not heavily loaded. After the first three weeks of operation, I started getting occasional memory errors with reboots. This went on for several days then stopped, with no problems in the last three days. I have no experience with external dvd burners so I can't comment on that. One option would be to drop another SATA drive into the system to use for backup. You will need a 1 in. SPUD bracket to mount the drive on (or buy a drive from Sun). I don't know if the connector locations are standardized on SATA drives but you should be OK with a Seagate drive (My system came with a Seagate ST380013AS.) |

I've got a SPUD bracket so it should'nt be a problem. I already have a three button logitech mouse like what you describe and it gets easy enough to use. I was hoping that someone else here would comment on the back up issues tho. If only they had put in a CD+RW drive. But your idea may just as easily be usable. I just purchased an HP dual core machine for $1300 from Costco. I really do not like XP Pro after using it for a while. I had solaris 8 x86 on an old IBM and had nowhere near the problems that XP presents. The reason I ask about how the ultra-20 works is that I can take this PC back for a full refund and turn around and buy a Sun ultra-20. I will need to ask you one more favor... does Solaris 10 have a realaudio player from realnetworks installed? I like to listen to music at night off the internet. |

| >> Real player is not available for Solaris 10 x86. > Now that IS sad. It used to be. There seems to be no technical reason why it shouldn't be. Nothing seems to be happening with the Intel Solaris development on the helix site. Unfortunately, the helix developers have chosen a complex build process so even getting started has a huge initial step. It might be faster to take a completely different approach starting from scratch :-) -- Geoff Lane Today's Excuse: CPU needs bearings repacked |
