Separately from the context,
you need to upgrade, 7.2 is far too old.

Some questions (altho i dont run suse or linux):

Has psql ever run correctly in the past on your very machine as is now?
When you connect from the other host do a:
select version();

(just to see your backend version too, this info is needed if you want
to track down some suse package issue).

Then try to figure out, how the various PgSQL packages were installed.

(In my FreeBSD machines, I DO IT BY HAND AND ONLY BY HAND).

I'm wondering that too, since the version string suggests that this psql
came from one of Red Hat's customized builds. What's it doing on a SUSE
box? Is it even compatible with the system's libraries?
