I reinstalled the previous version 8.0.4 as operationsengineer1
suggested and used the upgrade script to upgrade PostgraSQL to version
8.1.0-2.

That did work. It is definitely an installer problem of the PostgreSQL
8.1.0-2.

I will post a message to the pgsql-ports mailing list and wait and see
what they come up with.
