| We are in the market for a new terminal server and was looking for recommendations. We will need to administer the following consoles: Sun servers, Extreme switches, Cisco routers, IBM FasT Raid controllers, Brocade SAN Switches, some custom built Linux servers (with console redirection), and various other odds and ends in our data center. Main features we are looking for: - 48+ ports - SSH v2 - Sun break safe - SNMP capable - Rack mountable - Redundant power supplies (with 2 cords, not 1) Thanks for any recommendations. -chuck |

You just need to document what will make Solaris abort instead of the break signal, so your fellow sysadmins (and Sun support techs) know what to do. -Greg -- Do NOT reply via e-mail. | Try Avocent. I'm not sure if it meets all of your requirements but it does support a variety of machines. We have it connected to Suns with video, Suns with serial (v100), PCs, and Macs. Once nice thing about it is that you can access your systems remotely via a web page (which uses a Java app in the web page). |

We have had them for about six months now and are very very happy with them. This product is sold by a company called thinglogical. http://www.thinklogical.com/products/scs_320R.html its based on a linux kernel and has some really cool features. Good luck...and let me know if you find a product that is better than this one. Cheers! Zombie -- zombie |

I'm looking for a similar unit (but less ports) right now, and my Sun dealer recommended a product from Lightwave (www.lightwave.de). Their secure console servers are available with 8/16/32/48 ports, in non-redundant and redundant configurations. They are "Sun Solaris Ready", and seem to run a full linux distribution (so should be flexible enough for any needs). Of course I can't "recommend" them, as I haven't used them yet. mp. -- Systems Administrator | Institute for Software Science | Univ. of Vienna |

Thanks for all the suggestions. I prefer to stay with a US vendor, preferably located on the west coast. -rhugga |

I would also steer completely clear of dedicated bits of kit (like the Lightwave console server) that run a "full" distribution of an operating system, rather than an embedded version. Especially if the operating system is Linux. You might just buy yourself a (probably) very expensive doorstop server. |
