Default Convert mail from Mozilla to Thunderbird

I was using the mail tool in Mozilla 1.7 on my Sun for reading email and
newsgroups. Hence I have loads of messages and contacts.

Since Solaris 10 update 4 has Thunderbird, and that seems to be
developed more, I decided to change to that. But I dont seem to be able
to import my old messages and contacts. It offered the chance to do it
from Netscape 4.7 (or something like that), but nothing from Mozilla 1.7.

Any suggestions?

I store all my email on IMAP based server. So no mater if I am using
SquirrelMail for nuts, or whatever it works. Even if you use an ISP with
POP3, download it and move the mail to the IMAP server.

If your using Solaris 10, numerous IMAP based servers abound.

The mail is no longer on the server - some is years old. It is stored on
my local disk only.

The server is POP3, but I can read the new mail OK, but I'd like to get
at the old stuff.

I think what he's saying is setup an IMAP mail server, then use your
Mozilla mail to move the folders onto the IMAP server. Once that's
done, fire up Thunderbird and re-download or move the folders into
Thunderbird. It is a little involved, I know.

Thunderbird supposedly comes with a migration tool too. From the FAQ:

How do I migrate my Mozilla mail and settings to Thunderbird?

Thunderbird includes an auto migration tool that imports your
Mozilla 1.x or Netscape 7.x profile directly into Thunderbird without
you having to do anything.

I see one under Tools -> Import, but never tried it.

Kevin

I never did get that to work, so I backed up my mail, created a new
account with Thunderbird and copied the old files over into the new
directories.

my pop3 and imap account from netscape/7.0 migrated perfectly/automagically
to thunderbird 2.0.6 ( sfw ), all mail & newsgroups.

You're right, Netscape worked OK for me as well, it was Mozilla to
Thunderbird that didn't (there isn't an option to import from Mozilla)

A suggestion:

Not sure about mozilla 1.7 but you could simply try copying the mailbox
file across to the Thunderbird mail directory. It's all plain text (as I
guess Moz 1.7 is).

Note I said *copy* not move - if it does not work you can delete the
file that you copied across.

Failing that then have a look at the Moz 1.7 mailbox file and see if it
is the same format or if it is very similar then fix with an editor.

I've moved old mailboxes around from existing versions of Thunderbird
and Mozilla and from PC to UNIX like this and cannot remember when it
did not work (from PC to UNIX then convert line endings).

Worth a try and nothing to loose (apart from 5 minutes) if the tools
import did not work.
John.

Yes,

I did that, and on the whole it worked. I needed to recrate my filters
and I dont seem to have the address book (I'm not sure what file that
is, so perhaps I can move that too). But I seem to be mostly there.
