Default corrupt kernel?

Hi,
I've got a Sparc 5 running Solaris 8 and at boot time it drops to
the OK prompt with the following error

do_relocate: bad strndx 21916
do_relocations: /kernet/genunix do_relocate failed
krtld: error during initial load/link phase

I've booted off CD and it comes up okay,
I can fsck and mount the disks, no problem,
though the messages file does report several disk errors over
the past month.
I can add an external disk and install the OS there and boot off
that.

What can I do to get the system to boot off the original disk
short of reinstalling the OS (no problem) and then assorted
applications (large problem).

Thanks, David
