| Hello All (I hate that intro as much as you do...), Having just dropped s10_44 (Solaris Express 11/03) successfully onto an Ultra 1, and my appetite having been more than whetted by Gavin M in a previous thread; is the Solaris Dynamic Tracing Guide available to Joe Public FOC, or is that 99 bucks the bottom line? Manpages for dtrace, libdtrace and dtrace(7D) are all pathetic... dtrace -? gives the "most" info, and docs.sun.com has not heard of it :-( TIA, Beardy. |

If you haven't already, check out my previous post on the subject in comp.unix.solaris. The Dynamic Tracing Guide is available publicly here: http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/dtrace/ There's a link to "Download the Solaris Dynamic Tracing Guide" there; it's in PDF, and that should be more than enough documentation to get you started. > Manpages for dtrace, libdtrace and dtrace(7D) are all pathetic... Apologies for that -- the 11/03 Solaris Express didn't have the right manpage. That's been rectified, and should show up properly in the 12/03 cut of Solaris Express. >dtrace -? gives the "most" info, and docs.sun.com has not heard of it :-( We're still working on docs.sun.com. If you go to docs.sun.com and then Product/Software/Solaris/Solaris Express, you'll see docs for the Solaris Express Collection. Under there, there's a link to the Dynamic Tracing Guide. That's the good news. The bad news is that it's "locked" at the moment. If you pay the 99 bucks, you should get a password to access these docs. For whatever it's worth, the doc available from the BigAdmin site is exactly the same as the docs.sun.com doc -- but we obviously want to provide something that's easily searchable, browsable via the web, etc. It obviously makes no sense for this doc to only be available for those who pay the 99 bucks when we're giving it away on BigAdmin; we hope to have this available publicly on docs.sun.com soon... - Bryan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bryan Cantrill, Solaris Kernel Development. bmc@eng.sun.com (650) 786-3652 |

Many thanks for all of this Bryan. Looking forward to 12/03 and Kevlar ;^) Beardy. |

Many thanks for all of this Bryan. Looking forward to 12/03 and >Kevlar ;^) Yeah, zones are very, very cool. And that's not even all that we have on tap for you in this release. We've been very busy; stay tuned... I especially like the Glossary that says that DTrace is "A dynamic tracing facility that provides concise answers to arbitrary questions". So if I ask DTrace "is it OK is I go to the bar for a few drinks with the guys?", I get the answer "Not if you want dinner"; in which case it should be renamed DWife ;-) > >>Cool.
