Most of the Sun servers don't have a machine readable serial # (aka the system serial # that's printed on the box). Many admins fix this problem by updating the eeprom oem-banner parameter with this value prior to putting the system in service. Sounds like you didn't. | Hi..............please find the sneep to solve ur serial number issues - Sneep provides a persistent, software-accessible Chassis Serial Number (CSN) for virtually all Sun Solaris hardware platforms. Sneep uses the system EEPROM for storage of the Chassis Serial Number and any other important user-defined data such as asset, contract, or location information. The presence of the software-accessible serial number and other service-related information can significantly simplify activities related to system service and asset management. This is a full installation of Sneep 2.5_R1.76 with all supporting documentation. Changes include: Release 2.5 rev 1.76 20050816 Fixed: Bug 00016 'tr' causes message "Bad String" in UTF-8 locales Revised Documentation Updated with Access information for Sun Download Center Updated with new internal download URL Note: Both Compress (.Z) and ZIP (.zip) formats are available for download. Only one of these is necessary, as both formats contain the same tar file of the SUNWsneep package. After uncompressing, unpack the tarfile using a command like : tar xpf SUNWsneep_2.5_Rx.y.tar English Solaris (SPARC and Intel) English Solaris (SPARC and x86) Price: Free Download http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=4304155a |

You still need to tell Sneep what the serial number of the system is in the first place. Once you've told it the serial number it will remember it for the future, but it is no way of getting it in the first place. Scott |
