A friend has just downloaded Solaris 10 for SPARC and there disks are 1,
2, 3 and 4. Is '1' a useless install disk as per Solaris 8 and 9, or
does one need to use all disks?

Booting from CD 1 is required.

You need all disks; there's no longer a "installer" and "1of2/2of2" disks;
there's just the installed disks.
