Default problem with CDE

I'm sorry to post it again but I'm unable to find a solution.
A few days ago I had to kill my CDE session, since it was locked. Now
when I try to log-in again I cannot start CDE (kde works fine). A window
saying that maybe the host name is not set appears, but the host name is
set as well. I'm using solaris 8.

I'd like also to ask a few other questions:
1) in Linux you can reboot X using CTRL+ALT*BACKSPACE, is there
something similar in Solaris?
2) how can I switch from X to a console and vice-versa? In linux it
suffices to press CTRL*ALT*Fn and CTRL+ALT+F7, is there something
similar in Solaris?

Thanks,
Luca

The only idea I have is that you might have set display resolution to
a value so the Xserver crashes (check with fbconfig).
Perhaps KDE works because it overrides the wrong defaults with its own
values.

I dont know what you mean by "reboot X".
In Solaris you can restart the Dtlogin window.
During a CDE session you can restart the window manager.

No. The Solaris console only permits one login at a time.

Not in the default configuration of the Xsun server - that's a feature
of the X server, not the OS. If you install the Xorg or XFree86 servers
on Solaris, you'll get the same behavior since you'll have the same X
server. You can also configure Xsun to do it - see
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...e.berkeley.edu

That is an OS feature, and is only possible using an unsupported hack
on Solaris x86 versions 2.1 -> 7. It's not possible on Solaris SPARC
nor later versions of Solaris x86.
