I just installed Solaris on my laptop - to a USB attached drived. It
works and runs well, but there was a failure at the end of the
installation and I'm wondering what effect it might have.

After the graphical interface came up, a dialog prompted me to
insert the "software 5" CD, whatever that is. This step could be
skipped, but no matter what was done, the system would follow with
a reboot prompt - no other choice possible.

I was able to open another window, from where I was able to modify a
script that looked like it *might* be associated with the dialog prompt
(aggravating!!!!). I had the script exit early and then let the system
reboot.

I unfortunately can't find the script anymore.

What was the system doing, and have I missed anything important?

It was asking you for the 5th Solaris CD. How did you install it
(from CD or DVD)?

I downloaded the 5 zipped iso fragments and burned a DVD with them.
I don't think it would have gotten that far if I'd somehow forgotten
to concatenate one of the binary images ....

I'd be tempted to try putting the DVD back in, though it is probably
too late now...

Why? You mean re-do the installation? I don't know where I would start,
other than to reformat...

But, FWIW, I ran isovfy on the DVD and it came up with "No errors found".

Sorry, I was incoherent. My best guess was that it was actually
looking for something that was on the DVD and misreporting it as
wanting CD 5. So, perhaps, if you'd put the DVD back in while is was
asking for CD 5 it might have been happy.

I'm not sure how you recover now, other than starting from 0. There
probably is a way however.

Tried that. It popped the tray back out again.

? you mean there's a single DVD ISO on the web page?

I didn't see it. I can't even imagine it was there, because
at least two different web pages there explained how to concatenate
the 5 images to one DVD ISO and burn it.

As explained elsewhere, the resulting DVD ISO imagine checked out
with isovfy(1) and didn't have any other problems. I don't think
my problem was related to the media.
