| I picked up a couple of 4Gb Seagate SCSI drives recently (used but "supposedly" pulled from a working system-- I know to take this with a grain of salt, but "what the hey"). They are recognized on "boot -r" ( device files are created) but are reported as being "unformated" Running format I define the type as (based on a "loose" description I found on another group posting) Specify disk type (enter its number): 16 Enter number of data cylinders: 3880 Enter number of alternate cylinders[2]: Enter number of physical cylinders[3882]: Enter number of heads: 16 Enter physical number of heads[default]: Enter number of data sectors/track: 135 Enter number of physical sectors/track[default]: Enter rpm of drive[3600]: 5400 format> inquiry Vendor: SEAGATE Product: ST15230W SUN4.2G Revision: 0764 format> analyze format> format Ready to format. The disk may be able to be reformatted this way if an earlier formatting operation was interrupted by a power failure or SCSI bus reset. | The operating system does not recognise the hard-disk eventhough the BIOS leve does 1) what solaris version ? 2) If hard-disk not listed in sun engineering hand-book , then most likely not supported by solaris 3) Does the hdd have any s/ware driver that can be install on the solaris? 4) Is it worth-while to use the old hdd to store the precious data? rgds JC |

| Solaris 7 5/99 ( I would like to go up to a newer version, but I am trying to mimic a system here that is at a remote location and I have no control over what version they are running). The drives are Sun (labelled and everything) 4G Ultra-wides so it is compatible. I have it in a 711 Multipack. The boot eprom seesm them correctly, so controller etc are working. As for #4- it all comes down to $$$$. I could get a "new old stock" one from a Sun authorized dealer, and pay as much for it as for a 500Gb drive on my Mac. Besides, I am basically trying to get enough drives set up ( capacity is not an issue) to try out Veritas here and learn the ins and outs w/out risking anything on the remote system. |
