| I backup the disk by the unix command ufsdump. Then I abort the backup process by pressing <Ctrl> <C>. This message appears: DUMP: NEEDS ATTENTION: Do you want to abort dump?: ("yes" or "no") I entered "yes". Then tape drive is busy: # mt -f /dev/rmt/0cn status /dev/rmt/0cn: Device busy Is there a unix command make the tape device not busy? |

Try kill -15 next time to see if it makes a difference. Did you wait for a period of time before checking the status? Tape drives can take minutes to rewind/release their SCSI status... Failing that, start with the usual ps/fuser/lsof to check for anything holding the drive open. -- I have observed that facts cannot be derived from observations - and that's a fact ;^) |

You're slipping ;^) TCMa: please don't try with/without a SUN support contract... -- I have observed that facts cannot be derived from observations - and that's a fact. |

You're slipping ;^) If you examine the headers closely you'll notice that that post wasn't one of mine but one by Plugger the putz (AKA Cypherpunk) doing his usual sock puppetry. Who else but he and Don Kook would be stupid enough to suggest a reboot? Perhaps Josh What's- His-Name but Plugger is so dumb he has to log in as root because the pathetic little script kiddie doesn't know how to create user accounts yet. He even thinks a ^W is a vi command. How dumb is that? -am © 2003 |

The message comes because there still is a process waiting on the drive to finish its current operation. Use smt -f /dev/rmt/0cn -wready status Repeat, if it does abort after 120 seconds and the drive is not yet ready. Note that smt understands the remote tape syntax used by ufsdump and star.
