Default Thunderbird 1.02 on Solaris 9 thunderbird attachment problem

Submitted the following question in the thunderbird support forum and
received zero responses to it, hoping maybe someone using Solaris may
have run into this and has some ideas on how to work around it.

I am trying to understand how thunderbird handles attachments in UNIX.
Using thunderbird 1.0.2 compiled from source on Solaris 9, and can't
get attachements to open from thunderbird. I have gotten mime types to
show up in the attachment/file types area of the options menu in
thunderbird by adding the external application I want to open the
attachment as the default action for the file type in firefox, then
copying the mimeTypes.rdf file from the firefox profile area over to
thunderbird's profile area. The problem is thunderbird won't open the
external application. When I click on an attachment with an associated
file-type/external app pair, nothing happens. Anyone else having
attachment problems with thunderbird, or have suggestions.

Have you tried the Sun-compiled version of Thunderbird that you can download
from the Mozilla site?

I have no problems at all with attachments using thunderbird on Solaris.

look at:
<path>/thunderbird-1.0.2/defaults/profile/mimeTypes.rdf
<path>/thunderbird-1.0.2/defaults/profile/US/mimeTypes.rdf

in home dir, there is:
../.thunderbird/lh6ld2sq.default/mimeTypes.rdf
../.thunderbird/lh6ld2sq.default/US/mimeTypes.rdf

only first one is modified for me, i suspect corrupt file, so i'll try
to delete it and reconstruct it.
