Default Ultra 10 fails to boot

I have powered on a Sun Ultra 10 that has not been on for over 4 years.
The server does not boot, which I am not surprised about.

POST seems to pass ok, as I get 1 beep, and cd device led flashes as
does floopy drive.
Sounds as though disk drive is spinning.
The power button led remains on.
No display on monitor, and have left server on for 45 minutes.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Garry

Do you know how the machine was originally being used 4 years ago?
If it was being used w/o a display, i.e. via the serial port, then the
input-device and output-device may be set to ttya.
Try disconnecting the keyboard and hook a NULL modem up to ttya set to 9600.
If you get to the ok> prompt then check the input-device and output-device
settings.
It may be as simple as setting input-device to keyboard and output-device to
screen.

If something else is failing you should see the errors via the terminal
session.

Good luck!

Trinean

There is a small battery embedded in, I believe, the NVRAM chip. I
think that is probably exhausted. Possible fixes are to replace the
chip or connect a battery of the proper voltage externally. Google can
probably turn up some information on this and ISTR a web site called
www.squirel.com that had some info. The information stored in NVRAM has
probably been lost.

Trinean,

Sorry for delay in reply, been off-line for some time!
Ultra was being used with monitor all those years ago, as I was
administrator of it.
But since it's de-commision, I 've gone on yo IBM AIX servers. so my
Sun/Solaris is rusty!

Richard,

Thanks for your reply, sorry I have not got earlier, been off-line for
a while.
I've removed the NVRAM, and I'm currently awaiting reply from resellers
I found from your link.

Thanks for the info.

Garry
