I'm not exactly sure what is or is not possible. 'dumpkeys' and 'loadkeys' would appear to dump the translation: NAME loadkeys, dumpkeys - load and dump keyboard translation tables SYNOPSIS loadkeys [filename] dumpkeys DESCRIPTION <snip> dumpkeys writes the current contents of the keyboard streams module's translation tables, in the format specified by keytables(4), to the standard output. but whilst that displays something, I dont get anywhere: kestrel / % dumpkeys > /tmp/foo kestrel / % loadkeys /tmp/foo /tmp/foo, line 4: syntax error Also tried kestrel / % kbd -s 1. The following looks semi-promising: tail /etc/default/kbd # Uncomment the following line to set up the keyboard layout. The # keyboard layouts supported can be listed by running 'kbd -s'. # The value will override the keyboard-layout value supplied in eeprom # if it exists in eeprom when system boots. #LAYOUT= But I cant reboot the machine yet, which that appears to need to take effect. Hence I cant test it. |

'dumpkeys' and > 'loadkeys' would appear to dump the translation: If you're just trying to generate the pounds sterling (£) character you should be able to do it readily with the US keyboard: Compose, l, -. In fact I just generated that one on a US PeeCee keyboard with the right "windows" key remapped. |

Also, is 'l' the lower case version of 'L', or is in the number one? If its possible to get the pound sign in less keystrokes, I would like to. It is a character I use quite a bit. I'd also like to disable that key between the Help and F1, which I have found no use for, but just an irritation. |

Now I know where the switches are, and my keyboard does not have them, I will not bother removing the keyboard. I'll try to find a software solution to remapping the keys. Unfortunately, I would rather not reboot for a month or so, so things that need a reboot will have to wait for another week |

I got the soldering iron out, and joined the first and last. It has swapped some keys around, but still i get a #. I am going to take it apart again and have another try, this time joining the 3 centre ones, not the 2 outer ones. Watch this space ... > > > |

I've now swapped changed the solder bridges on the board, but not entirely successfully. 1) It got rid of the annoying 'ANY' key, which is now an Esc key. 2) No UK pound key 3) The backspace key no longer works as a backspace, but instead prints '\' or, if the shift key is down, it prints '|'. Since the backspace and the \ keys are of different sizes, it is not as simple as just moving the key caps. A few other keys have moved around. Having some old keyboards around, I can move the key caps so things look right, but it seems the UK and US keyboards have different layouts of keys, so it is not as simple as just bridging the connections. Not to worry. If the Sun dealer gets off his **** and sends me a quote, I will buy a new type 7 country kit. |

| I've got a type 6 American keyboard on a SunBlade 100 running Solaris 10. If I type Compose, Shift and L, then a -, I get an English pound sign in an xterm window. For a Gnome terminal window and this window, (whatever firefox puts up to read Goggle Groups) I get:L£ |

| The new keyboards are cheap from SUN. I just bought a TYPE 7 country kit for $57 which was surprisingly inexpensive considering its from SUN.
