| One of our clients has been using ontape successfully for some time but have been throwing away logical logs on the basis that they could restore to the previous night. I have persuaded them to look at onbar and to backup their logs and after a failure to get it working correctly with ISM they are now implementing a BakBone NetVault Storage Manager based solution. This is not without difficulty with the dialects of jargon - but we are getting there slowly. However their next challenge is that they would like to run both ontape and onbar for a period of time to backup the same server. I don't think that should present a problem - or does anybody think or know different? regards Malcolm |

| Malcolm, You can not mix ontape with onbar. You need to use ontape or onbar for both the physical backup and logical log backup in order to be able to successfully restore. Also, if you switch to onbar you will need to backup the logs to successfully restore or use the (-w) option when you take the level 0 with onbar in order to skip the log restore. This option mark all the dbspaces with the same archive time stamp. Otherwise each dbspace may have a different time stamp and you will need to restore the logs to sync everything up. Hope this helps. Personally, I find one of the clinchers to be that, particualrly when married with Omniback/Data Protector, onbar will often not work for restores. Backups are usually fine though! |
