Default Informix IDS Beta on SuSE 10.2 Pentium III

I attempted to install Informix IDS Beta on SuSE 10.2. But it crapped out twice, and would not complete the installation.

Facts

1. I created user informix and group informix before installation.
2. INFORMIXDIR unset

First time I installed it failed because I changed the default location for the rootdbs. It errored out because the directory didn't exist. OK, so fine, they could have put a "mkdir -p /data/informix/demo" to create the directory in case it didn't exist.

So, second install, I created the /data/informix/demo directory to create the rootdbs, before running the installation.

What follows is the output of the whole doggone installation. If you have any children in the room, cover their eyes.
( Trying to be dramatic here :-)

INFORMIXDIR was unset now that I think of it. Maybe that's what caused the problem?
( I would think this should be set internally in the installation. )

Looks like installation completed successfully and the demo instance
initialization failed.

Can you successfully initialize an engine manually?

You might want to post this to the Cheetah Test Run Support Forum at
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/fo...um=1071&cat=19 if
you haven't already. Someone monitoring that forum might be able to better
explain what happened.

Just rereading your post.

Before running the install, do you

1. touch /data/informix/demo/rootdbs
2. chown informix:informix /data/informix/demo/rootdbs
3. chmod 660 /data/informix/demo/rootdbs

Can I suggest that you try Oracle instead? Their install process is much
simpler.

Well, my hard drive may not have enough space for Oracle. Doesn't Oracle
take up something like 5GB of space? And I think my little Pentium III
pooch would probably die trying to run it. I've got MySQL and Informix,
what else do I really need?

True!
I keep noticing this each time a customer team member sitting near by
tries this.

Sometimes he has to get it patched before installing, then he have to
copy it from CD to disk (really can't figue that out...) and then he has
to fool the installer to think it's running in a supported environment,
last but not least he has to solve all the linking problems (unsupported
glibc, unsupported gnuc, etc.) and then, finally it works!

Much easier!

Please turn the irony sensors on

Regards.
