On many platforms (Solaris, Linux, etc) You
can't break large disk (70 GB or 140 GB) into
proper number of partitions (raw devices)

On Linux, the limit for SCSI drive is 16
Partitions - that is, You can't use HDD's larger
then 32 GB

Yeah, but you can use soft partitions on solaris to get around this, and
no-one uses IDS on new stuff like Linux, they're all busy implementing DB2
Express.
