| I too don't want to see any body, least of all the US government, policing the internet. People talk about individuals taking a stand but the weaknesses of the internet are plain to see. People can impersonate others, can cause rift and discontent. We've seen on this list just how many people can hide behind aliases, or post with bogus addresses in the forlorn hope that they won't get spammed. I continue to believe that the only real answer is to have moderated member only mailing-lists with strict checks on who joins. We can't trust anybody on public newsgroups anymore. And we will have to pay for the privilege of using these facilities as well, as the cost of checking validity and content of emails and attachments is not insignificant. I even have a facility available to me now where I can have a different email address for each group that I belong to, which means I can tell which group has been monitored for spamming purposes. GREAT! But it can't stop the abuse of my email address. Other people can post in my name, and can send me unsolicited correspondence. It is an offence to publish pornographic material, but I doubt if anybody on the internet has not received some at one time. And as to the US government ... I'm afraid that the recent actions of governments and politicians have forced me to revise my ideas of people I can trust. In descending order Car salesmen Real-estate agengies Journalists Politicians The US government But I don't want to start a political debate.
