| Well, strictly speaking I mainly regurgitated what was on the press release, but hope to add some more during the day.. Note the link in the press release will be going live very shortly (it should be already but....) We're all on IBM's case to publicise IDS more, and there you go! I don't quite understand the proposition: is it that you will be able to buy an IBM x3105 pre-installed with SuSE Ent Linux and IDS11 (presumably Express) as an all-in bundle for substantially less thanit would cost to buy the 3 individual components? Let's hear more of this sort of thing from senior IBMers too: "The IDS data server provides an environment with low administration needs, which in turn lowers the total cost of ownership ...." said Arvind Krishna, vice president IBMdata servers (?) (although he did then rather spoil it by lapsing into IBM-speak by adding " ... and frees up DBAs to focus more attention ontheir overall Information on Demand strategy.") I think this isvery positive. | Is this going to be yet another crippled fucked up release or is it going to be a production-ready release? | It will probably not be a production-ready release as it is a beta. For a production-ready release you might have to pay some money for a supported version. Have you tried the download available from the IIUG website? How is that crippled? | Hadn't bothered with the IIUG version as they disable replication and put some kind of user limit on it. I will most likely have to get a VAR to get me the media for a production-ready release. Unfortunate that I have to do that. I haven't had to do that for DB2, Oracle, MS-SQL-Server, MySQL, BerkeleyDB, Postgres, Ingres, etc etc etc. Of course those versions don't have the IIUG meddling in the download. -t- Andrew Ford wrote: > It will probably not be a production-ready release as it is a beta. > > For a production-ready release you might have to pay some money for a > supported version. > > Have you tried the download available from the IIUG website? The product won't be GA until July (give or take one month...). It's meant only for testing purposes. If I recall correctly this is the first time we have an open Beta of IDS. In fact, I'd say the first time for any Informix product (except the recently announced CSDK 3.0 Beta. | Question - Since this 11 Beta includes the onconfig parameter VP_MEMORY_CACHE_KB I would expect it to based off 10.00.xC6 source however onconfig parameter SINGLE_USER_MODE_WITH_DBSA is not listed in the documentation for this beta. Will this be added to the product? - How does RTO_SERVER_RESTART affect things? If i specify a large checkpoint interval and LRU_MAX_DIRTY how can the server meet this? Also how can does it determine how much activity can be performed in the time period? That must depend on how busy other processes are on the host and (for me) how busy the SAN is from activity from other hosts (yes 2 hosts can share a disk array!). PS SHMVIRTALLOCSEG having an alarm feature is cool! Also ontape to directories (finally!) is cool but the ability to list multiple (colon seperated, like DBSPACETEMP) directories and have individual volumes to always go to the directory that is on the filesystem with the most free space would be nice. I have a HUGE script to do this with ontape at present and it takes a LOT of testing! (See I should have been in the closed beta!). Finally the ability to limit the amount of memory used by an individual session would be nice, again with an alarm). If I have a server with 64Gb of RAM and a sessions goes rogue I don't want it allocating >60GB of RAM! |

Basically we are monitoring the amount of work which we think that we will need to do to recover the instance. That means basically keeping track of the distance since the last checkpoint. Since we have introduced non-blocking checkpoints, having checkpoints more frequently is not a big deal. > Also how can does it determine how much activity can be performed > in the time period? If we sense that you want to recover the server in 5 min in all cases, and that means that we need to issue a checkpoint after 10 min., then we do so. Again, since we now have non-blocking checkpoints, then the cost of a checkpoint is not a big expense. > and (for me) how busy the SAN is from activity from other hosts > (yes 2 hosts can share a disk array!). > > PS SHMVIRTALLOCSEG having an alarm feature is cool! > > Also ontape to directories (finally!) is cool but the ability to list > multiple (colon seperated, like DBSPACETEMP) directories and have > individual volumes to always go to the directory that is on the > filesystem with the most free space would be nice. | FInally, AUTO_AIOVPS is not explained that well. "the database server |automatically increases the number of AIO VPS and flusher threads when the |server detects that AIO VPs are not keeping up with the I/O workload" What threshold determines this? Couldn't adding more and more AIO VPS and flusher threads just make the problem worse? |

Although this changed from 7.31 because of lock table dynamic nature, I still think this should be limited. As far as I know there is a feature request for this (limit several resources by session), but I don't know the state of it.
