What do you expect when he can't grok cpio?

Sorry but cpio and tar should be second nature to anyone who's been around
Unix/Linux for a while.

Maybe timmy is slipping? ;-)

Tar is no problem. The _ONLY_ time I've ever used cpio was for Informix! Never for anything else in 20 years of using UNIX and now the past 10 years of Linux, I've never had to use cpio for anything. There's some moron at IBM that must have come from Informix and perpetuated the stupidity of releasing something in cpio.

Well on UNIXWare tar is not large file capable
http://www.dbforums.com/archive/index.php/t-426665.html

"do a ScoHelp search on "large file", you'll get a hit for
"Considerations for large
files", that will take you to "man 2 intro" where it will tell you
that "cpio" is ok
for large files, but "tar" is not."

cpio is only used on a few platforms.

tar cannot backup special devices e.g. raw devices.

I used cpio on SCO XENIX/UNIX in 1994 for full system backups and
that was less than 20 years ago...

FYI the install floppies for SCO were in tar format. I know because
someone did rm -rf / x

We could not restore from system backups since they were in cpio
format..and /bin/cpio was missing as well!

/bin/tar was still there and as the true genius I am I managing to
untar /bin/cpio from a SCO installation floppy!

Once /bin/cpio was back I left it to the normal sysadmin (a lesser
and now quite scared minor god) to work late and
do the rest!
