| 1. Download either Mozilla Thunderbird, the email client, or the whole integrated package of email and browser from Mozilla. 2. Install on your computer. You can continue to use Outlook or Outlook Express, this will not interfere with those softwares. The nice thing about setting up a separate news reader is so that you can control your news separate from typical email accounts. You don't need an email account to post if you do it this way, but for fun you can be a clown or whoever you want to be. 3. Spend a tiny amount of money on a news-server account, instead of sending to the informix-list. Typically you can find a service for around $10 USD/month. If you're too cheap to do this then hunt for a free news-server. They seem to be harder and harder to find. www.usenetserver.com is one that is extremely cheap, but great for totally anonymous posting. You can be whoever you want, post plain-text messages, avoid the spam traps, and the hate mail. YOU DO NOT NEED AN EMAIL ADDRESS TO POST NEWS IF YOU DO IT THIS WAY. You can also go over to GOOGLE and post there if you don't mind the web-based interface, again if cost is an issue. At any rate, you'll find a whole world of not only news out there in Usenet newsgroups, including images, movies, games, and a lot of strange people. A lot of universities host news servers, check your locale to see if they will either give you an account, or how much they charge for monthly access and the bandwidth. www.usenetserver.com is very liberal on the bandwidth by the way. 4. Once you found a news-server, set up Thunderbird and start posting or reading your news in Thunderbird. There are also a few other news readers, FreeAgent comes to mind, with its pro version that costs a little, but is for the total news junky. 5. One other small note, your network admin may have blocked the in/out port for news, typically port 119, so you might have to check with them to open the port if you're posting from work. Have a lot of fun! Dirk Moolman wrote: > In my case I have no control over it - due to the anti-spam filter I am using which intercepts and forwards all my mail ... > |
