Looks like it is treating that "file disk ISMData" like the tape and
mounts/relabels it every time before it overwrites it?

I do not know too much about it but here is from my deamon.log file ....
DYZ672 gets automatically recycled and reused...

Dear all

we ran into interesting backup behavior (9.30.UC4/UnixWare7.1.3)

When doing backup with Onbar/ISm to local file system everything works fine.
When doing the same backup with same configuration to NFS file system
(NAS LAN device directories)
ISM writes 1 block of data (1 log or 1 dbspace) and lost volume label as
it would be unmounted and unlabeled.
Have you seen such thing before?
