Just that their jobs will change from baby sitter to Data Architect. (More challenging and a good thing.) Assuming that this is after the server is up and running and that its performing well with those SANS etc ... ;-) The point of automating some of the tuning process isn't going to make the DBA redundant, but that a less trained person in a smaller shop could get the machine up and running out of the box and actually get decent performance. Suppose IBM IM Lab Services were to offer a service to spend a week doing an install, and tuning of the engine. (This also includes mentoring and some skills transition time) In the US, that would be approximately 10K plus reasonable T&L. To a large client like Harry E Butts (yes, thats what HEB stands for, I kid you not!) 10K is nothing. But to an SMB client, 10K could be a large chunk of their IT budget. And the way IBM appears to be positioning IDS, that's your target audience. If you're going on record that IDS is a "lights out" minimal admin database, then you're going to also want the install process to be as simple as it can be. And Martin, to your earlier point about wanting full control... Sun Micro didn't have an admin tool like HP or IBM (SAM or SMIT). Made my life as a sysadmin a lot easier, especially when I had to build the machines after hours. ;-) And that's the key point. By having a "smart" system that can create a basic and fairly accurate system out of the box, doesn't preclude someone like you from going in and tweaking the system install process. Or modifying the onconfig parameters manually. __________________________________________________ _______________ Get a FREE Web site, company branded e-mail and more from Microsoft Office Live! http://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/mcrssaub...mrt/direct/01/ |
