It is extremely unlikely that this is the problem, but I would make sure
my engine and client were both on the same number of bits, 7.31.Uxx is a
32-bit port on a 32-bit platform, whereas 9.51.Hxx is a 32-bit port on a
64-bit platform. I've heard allegations of "weird things" happening with
the Hx ports.

Long shot....Ask hp about patch PHNE_123456 if i recall correctly or
(no joke!! )
check if it's installed.

another question:

when this happens how many sessions are open to the database;
have seen problems when it got around 2000.
