Default Restore failure

While attempting to restore an ontape archive, I get this error:

Continue restore? (y/n)y
Do you want to back up the logs? (y/n)n
16:50:22 shmat: [22]: operating system error
Physical restore failed - function read archive backup failed code -1
errno 14

Program over.

Also, in what may be related, when I attempt to run archecker on the
archive, I get this error in the ac_msg log:

unable to open a partition file

Any likely culprits here? The archive is on a new 100 GB tape from a
Seagate Ultrium 1 LTO tape drive. Using Unixware 7.1.3 and IDS
7.30.UC2.
