| We're planning on upgrading from AIX 4.3.3 to 5.1 and IDS 7.24 to 9.4 over the weekend soon. Does anyone else think this is a bit risky? I recall something similar happening where I used to work and it was a real pain trying to figure out which upgrade caused the problem (it was HP-UX though - don't remember the versions) It turned out the problem in that case was a faulty DBA (not me!) - left out an index because he also recreated some tables to use fewer extents. |

Listen to the chorus. Test the upgrade. Buy, rent or steal some hardware, set it up to match your current config and then perform the upgrade and see what happens. Test that you can get back if you have to revert halfway through. Find all the "faulty DBA" and "negligent SysAdmin" problems before you start. If you don't, Monday could be horrible..... DT |

We successfully completed an upgrade project going from AIX 4.3.0 to 5.2 and IDS 7.30 to 7.31 (application vendor did not want 9.40!). On top of that, we introduced HDR into the mix. The "upgrade project" also included new hardware though (went from an F50 to two B80's in an HDR replicated pair). We had enough time and single point of responsibility (us) to plan and provide everything, including extensive testing, and we had a good, successful project. If you are going towards an in-place upgrade (i.e. you do not have a separate server you can at least test this with) on both AIX and IDS, then I would recommend upgrade one at a time (actually I would recommend go ahead and buy a cheap box you can use for testing this if you do not have one)...
