| Hi all, We are running around 10 stable instances of IDS 9.21 with lots of 4GL code written in v7.3 on HP-UX 11.0. I know, it's really old and long overdue for an upgrade !! We tried for some time, but de-support of HP-UX 11.0 is finally enabling us to upgrade the IDS engine. We want to upgrade our O/S (from HP-UX 11.0 to HP-UX 11.11) and IDS engine as well. Considering IBM's 4GL development has stopped at 7.32, which version would we be better off at migrating, is it 9.40 or 10.0 ? IBM website does not mention any EOS/EOM for 9.40 or 10.0. As a techie (I am a DBA), I would like to push for 10.0 but our management wants a least-complicated way of upgrading. Of course, this also depends on how our 4GL code and how it goes during system testing. Are there any catches in going to 10.0 vs 9.40 ? Are there technically any huge differences in maintaining the two versions ? Can anyone point me to any realistic resources ? Appreciate your valuable advice ! Many thanks Prashant |

| Prashhnt Version 10 has been out for over a year and has had 5 'rounds' of bug fixes so should be stable. Which ever version you go to you would be advised to recompile all your code so I would take the opportunity to upgrade to 7.32 (the latest) 4GL. There will be bug fixes for 4gL but no futher development, so you my want to consider conversion to a different too ethr as prt of your uprd, or a future project. | You'll want to go to IDS 10.xC4??4 (the version with the security fixes) or IDS 10.xC5. Although no EOS date is set or published by IBM, the policy is. IBM will support products for a minimum of 5 years from announce and until at least two new generations of product are available. IBM has pre-announced the next version of IDS and projected an early 2007 release date. Because IDS 9.40 was released in 2004, you might end up with only two years of runway before EOS. IDS 10 will have a considerably longer shelf-life, but only go with fixpack 4 or higher for the better stability and more complete feature set. | It's too late for the beta program, but with some interesting features in 10.5 you might like to wait until early 07 when it should be out if you value things like update stats etc.. Also it's holiday season soon, so remember this always stuffs up testing. Reading between the lines below, 9.4 will be dropped the second 11.1 comes out (2 new generations)... Assuming this is Q3-08 or sometime like that then expect 9.4. to be dropped then. At this point, we can enjoy the new IBM Primary / Primitive storage manager re-write. Remember, IBM give 1 yrs warning. So a good idea of when 11 is going to be released may be implied from the IBM life cycle page if you like playing the derived information game. Peter. | Hi all, Many thanks for all of your inputs. We will be going soon to for a test with IDS 10.0 FC5 and 4GL 7.32 suite of tools, on HP-UX 11.11. Thanks again, Prashant PeterP wrote: > It's too late for the beta program, but with some interesting features > in 10.5 you might like to wait until early 07 when it should be out if > you value things like update stats etc..
