From this and what you've said before I think your ingres environment
variable file has been truncated. Check the file
/opt/CA/ingresii/ingres/files/symbol.tbl - does it contain anything.
Do you have a backup you could recover this file from?

Do you purge and/or prune the database regularly? I'm told that if you
don't do that then the database can grow very big - especially if
you're backing up lots of files.

Also it is possible to spread the database across different partitions
- called extending. This is possible during installation of BrightStor
- but also later using Ingres utilities. I won't go into the details
now but it may be something you should consider.
